            On October 29, 2012 officers from the Lawrence Police Department conducted a search for Deon Routt, a 22 year old male who escaped from custody Monday evening during a transport from Virginia to Colorado, via a private security contractor.  Officers searched the area near 23rd and Louisiana for hours following the escape, as well as an area near 15th and Haskell where a deputy spotted him later that evening. This morning officers from every division of the Lawrence Police Department were mobilized and assigned to search teams.  Officers distributed flyers with Mr. Routt’s photograph in person and electronically and searched neighborhoods, business districts and parks throughout the city. 

            At approximately 3:00pm today officers canvassing the Oread neighborhood on foot observed an individual who appeared to resemble Mr. Routt’s photograph, however was dressed in different clothing.  Officers attempted to contact the individual and he fled on foot from the area near 12th and Indiana.  After a two block foot pursuit Lawrence Police officers was able to capture Mr. Routt, who sustained minor injuries during the pursuit and arrest.  Mr. Routt was transported to the Douglas County Jail following his  medical treatment. 

            The Lawrence Police Department wishes to thank the members of the Lawrence community who assisted in providing information which helped lead to the capture of this individual, as well as the other law enforcement who also provided support.
