Standoff in Southwest Lawrence

On Tuesday, April 4, 2017, at approximately 7:15 a.m., officers with the Lawrence Police Department were dispatched to a residence in the 2500 block of Scottsdale Street in reference to a welfare check on a possibly suicidal subject. During the investigation it was determined the subject was possibly armed with a long gun and had allegedly discharged it from the residence sometime in the hours leading up to police being contacted. Out of an abundance of caution, the school district was contacted to implement their plans to keep students in the area schools safe. After multiple hours of phone contact and discussion, the individual voluntarily disarmed and exited his residence, where he was contacted by officers and taken into custody without further incident.

We would like to thank USD 497 and Douglas County Emergency Management, as well as the area residents and businesses for their cooperation in this incident. We will not have any more information to provide.
