Shooting Investigation Update
On Sunday, June 22nd officers from the Lawrence Police Department responded to the area of Harvard Road and Kasold Drive following a report of shots fired around 12:30am. After arriving, the first responding officer was directed to a residence at 1103 Kasold Drive. The officer contacted two individuals at the home and determined a domestic dispute was occurring. One subject, who was armed with a firearm, was shot by the officer. A second officer arrived at the home moments later. Both officers immediately summoned medical assistance and began performing first aid on the individual. He was later transported by air ambulance to the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas. He has since been treated and released from that facility.
Immediately following the incident, the Lawrence Police Department requested the assistance of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office to provide oversight and investigate the incident, given the nature of the event. The following day, Douglas County Sheriff Ken McGovern requested further assistance from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office. This was based on manpower needs and the investigative resources the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office could offer.
The two involved officers were placed on paid administrative leave following the incident. They have been interviewed by investigators and have fully cooperated in that process.
The investigation is winding down and all current investigative leads have been pursued. Therefore reports from each investigating agency are being forwarded to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office for review. Additional details will be available through the District Attorney’s Office.
