Shooting Investigation Update

On Sunday evening, shortly before 6:00pm, Lawrence Police responded to a shooting at an apartment complex located at 1121 East 13th Street.  Officers determined two individuals had been involved in a dispute, resulting in one subject being shot.  The injured subject died a short time later at Lawrence Memorial Hospital and has been identified as 26 year old Charles T. Brockman of Lawrence.  The other individual involved was located shortly after the incident and was questioned at the Law Enforcement Center Sunday evening.

Investigators determined Mr. Brockman arrived at the apartment complex at approximately 5:50pm, where many people were outside socializing and having a barbeque.  Mr. Brockman allegedly exited a vehicle near the parking lot entrance carrying a shotgun.  One individual, whom Mr. Brockman had a previous dispute with, ran toward the second floor of the apartment building where he attempted to enter one of the apartments.  Several individuals intervened and attempted to convince Mr. Brockman to put the weapon down and leave, however he did not.  Mr. Brockman then ran towards the apartment building with the shotgun as children and adults began to scatter.  Seconds later gunfire erupted near the east stairway of the building.  Mr. Brockman was shot by person he was pursuing, who was on the second floor near the stairway.  Mr. Brockman then walked to a nearby vehicle and was driven to the hospital where he later died.

Officers interviewed numerous people present when the incident occurred.  Some provided accounts of what occurred, while others declined to speak with officers.  Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Lawrence Police Department Investigations Division at (785) 832-7509.

At the conclusion of the investigation information will be forwarded to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office for consideration of charges related to this investigation.
