Officer Involved Shooting Update

OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING
On Sunday, at approximately 12:30am, Lawrence Police responded to the report of shots fired near the intersection of Harvard Road and Kasold Drive. Upon arrival the first responding officer was contacted by the caller, who directed the officer to a home at 1103 Kasold Drive. The caller advised he believed the sound of gunshots came from the home. The officer contacted two individuals present at the home, one of which was armed with a firearm. During the officer’s contact with the armed individual, he was shot by the officer. A second officer entered the interior of the home shortly after the officer discharged his firearm.
The officer involved in the shooting is Officer Skyler Richardson and the second responding officer is Officer Terry Haak. Officer Richardson, age 23, has been with the Lawrence Police Department since June of 2013 and Officer Haak, age 50, has been with the Department since 1987. Both officers remain on paid administrative leave.
Immediately following the incident, the Lawrence Police Department requested the assistance of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. On Monday, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office contacted the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office for additional investigative resources. Additional investigators were required to ensure a thorough investigation.
The investigation is ongoing. Additional details will be released in the future, following review by the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office and investigating agencies.
