February 2012 Employee of the Month Award

Officer Leo Souders has been with the police department since 1998, and served the public as a fire fighter prior to his service as a police officer. He sets an excellent example to other officers with his a strong work ethic; routinely taking on more than his share of the workload on any given shift. Officer Souders does not hesitate to volunteer for calls or to assist other officers with investigations; for example, during his career with the Lawrence Police Department, he obtained specialized training in accident investigations, and he uses that knowledge, not only to do an outstanding job with his own reports, but to regularly assist new officers who are just starting their careers, and other, more veteran officers, who appreciate his willingness to share that knowledge.

Officer Souders is an exemplary role model for how to maintain a positive attitude. He is not only a team-player, he is a team-builder, and his strength of character helps other officers maintain a positive attitude even in the most stressful situations. In his work with the citizens of Lawrence, Officer Souders has, many times, provided the calming presence so needed by individuals in crisis. He is well-known and well-liked in the community, and his breadth of knowledge about Lawrence and its citizens has provided both officers and citizens critical support and understanding during emergencies. Officer Souders represents the best qualities of public service, regularly attending and supporting community events; he is a great representative for the Lawrence Police Department, and the City of Lawrence. He is an outstanding officer; professional in his approach, knowledgeable, and caring in fulfilling his duties as a police officer.

The Lawrence Police Department is a better place to work, and the community a better place to live due to the service and dedication of Officer Leo Souders.
